Precision Agriculture Scientist – Pasture and Livestock Management

Conduct research into precision farming techniques to manage nutrients, water as well as biomass production in pasture based livestock production and develop innovative technologies in precision pasture management.

Lincoln Agritech Limited (LAL) is a leading edge, independent research and development company with a wide variety of industrial, agritech and environmental projects.  Lincoln Agritech employs around 45 staff, including scientists, research engineers and software developers.  We are small, we are nimble, and we punch above our weight.

Reporting to the Precision Agriculture group manager, you will be working on interdisciplinary research projects developing and applying sensors, agronomic management concepts and information based systems in primary production.  A strong focus of the role is on precision farming techniques to manage nutrients, water and biomass production in pasture based livestock production.  You will be working with a broader team of highly motivated scientists and engineers in LAL.  The core purpose of this role is the research, development and appliction of a broad range of electronic sensors, optical sensors and machine vision as well as other high-technologies for both national and global primary industries.  For the first two years, you will co-ordinate a larger multi-disciplinary. Multi organisation project on nitrogen management for pastures (OPTIMUM-N).  This position also offers the opportunity to develop your own research programme in the field of pasture based livestock production.

The PA-group of Lincoln Agritech supports research in precision agriculture in a well-established network.  These collaborations include Massey University, Lincoln University, University of Auckland, CRIs and international relevant PA-groups as well as farmers and farming organisations in New Zealand and abroad.  In this inspiring environment, you will plan, conduct, report and publish leading edge scientific research projects for developing innovative technologies in precision pasture management.

The successful candidate will have capabilities in one or more of the following areas:

- Management of grazed pastures
- Agronomy / Crop production
- Livestock husbandry
- Agricultural Engineering

with a strong focus on interdisciplinary systems approaches.  Know how in design and implementation of on-farm experiments and experience in managing research projects are sought.  We expect to appoint a candidate with a PhD though a highly motivated graduate with a Master’s degree will be considered.  We anticipate a start date in January 2016.
